What never to share before meeting
- Your home address or building. "South Mumbai" is fine; your society and flat number is not.
- Money, UPI IDs, OTPs or bank details. No genuine match asks for these, however sad the story.
- Your number too early. WhatsApp gives someone a permanent way to reach you. Chat on the app and video call first.
- Your exact workplace and routine. Company name is fine; your floor, route and daily timings are not.
First-date rules
- Meet in a busy public place you picked: a café, restaurant or mall.
- Tell a friend who you're meeting, where, and when you'll check in. Share their profile screenshot.
- Arrange your own transport both ways.
- Prefer a daytime or early-evening first date.
- Check menu prices before you order. Café bill scams, where a match takes you to a place that charges a huge bill, have been reported in several Indian cities.
Scam red flags on Indian dating apps
- Pushes to move to WhatsApp or Telegram straight away, where they can't be reported.
- Won't video call but wants to meet fast or keeps chatting for weeks.
- Photos look like a model shoot. Check them with Google Lens reverse image search.
- Money comes up: a medical emergency, a gift stuck at customs, or a "guaranteed" crypto or trading tip.
- Pushes for intimate photos or video calls early. These are often recorded for blackmail (sextortion).
A McAfee survey released in February 2026 found 1 in 7 Indians had lost money to an online dating or romance scam.

A match suggests a specific café or lounge, orders expensive items, and you're handed a huge bill, sometimes with pressure to pay. Pick the venue yourself and check prices before ordering.

Call 1930 immediately and report at cybercrime.gov.in. The sooner you report, the better the chance of stopping the transfer. Also report the profile in the app.
